Auto-Immune Diseases - When Body Starts Rejecting & Attacking Itself

It is known that immune system is a magical system we got in our body which fight against foreign materials such as viruses & bacteria and protects our body.

Let's talk how can the same magical system work weird, totally the opposite way.

When the immune system fails to identify the difference between its own cells and foreign materials, it will start attacking its own organs & tissues. This will also fail the body's own defenses against diseases. The whole process of rejection and attacking itself is called Autoimmune Diseases.

You don't have to be a doctor nor a professor in subject area to know about these diseases. Knowing how your body parts work will never harm you.

Rheumatoid arthritis, Myasthenia gravis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Grave's Disease & Lupus Erythematosus are few common autoimmune diseases out of many. The common factor in all above is that our immune system has traitors which will result in attacking our own system.

It is said that the hit from our closest would hurt more than a hit from an outsider. Even in this scenario, it can cause huge damages to our body. If it has affected a specific organ you call it an Organ-specific autoimmune disease and if an entire system is affected it is called an systemic autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases is a vast area of study. Hence, we will not go into depth of it and complicate the situation but for the time being let's also look at Immune Tolerance.

Immune Tolerance

This is the ability of cell's in the immune system to differentiate self antigens and non-self antigens. Antigens are the molecules produced by cells. This can either be produced by our own cells or by pathogens.

Out of many immune cells, T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes are involved in autoimmune diseases.
